This is the new cool! DOECHII
There’s a point on Doechii’s "Alligator Bites Never Heal", the Grammy winner for Best Rap Album, when she yells to the heavens, “I’m everythiiiiing!” Her cry hits as a refutation to those who contort themselves trying to cram her into one genre or identity. As it turns out, the self-anointed Swamp Princess is defining herself just fine. The Tampa-born, L.A.-based rapper/singer is one of the most dynamic of her generation — as compelling delivering blunt bars over literal boom bap, as she is cooing affirmations over astral jazz, barking orders over blistering house, and seducing over a radio-conquering R&B jam. In 2023 alone: Doechii scored her first RIAA Platinum plaque and Billboard Hot 100 hit, played Coachella’s main stage, popped in to perform on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, and hit the road with Doja Cat. Ultimately, though, what’s most impressive about Doechii isn’t simply that she excels at literally every form she explores. It’s that she is at home in her artistry, wherever it takes her. LOLA YOUNG
Lola Young is the author of one of the most honest and courageous albums of 2024. „This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway” is, much like Lola herself, brash, funny, fierce, almost ill-advisedly honest and profoundly south London. She was writing her own songs at 11 and attended the Brit School later on. Belief in her own music became everything. “I had nothing else in my life”, she noticed. She started building a following through open mic nights, small London pubs and venues, where labels began showing up. She signed her contract with Island aged only 18. Early 2023’s ‘Don’t Hate Me’ changed everything. The single from her project „My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely” went viral on TikTok, the DIY visual of Lola blaring on the streets of London inspiring lip-synch versions from not only 100,000+ other users but a heady procession of celebrities in the U.S. The track has forged an American following, and her Spring 2024 tour sold out in seconds. Today, there is no doubt, that she is a prodigious, prolific talent. See her live at Orange Main Stage, July 3.
