A Winter's Journey (5.07)

"A Winter's Journey"

Maja Kleczewska's play was one of the most famed premieres in the 2013 season. Named the key play of the year by "Polityka" weekly and "Dwutygodnik", it is a work on people lost in a labyrinth of words, buried alive, overpowered with terms, meanings, the past, the lost, grievances, photos, memories. Written by Austrian literary Nobel Prize winner, awarded with one of the most prestigious German drama awards: the 2011 MülheimerDramatikerpreis, this autobiographical work was confronted with the highly mediatised Natascha Kampusch and Elisabeth Fritzl cases. After the premiere show, Jacek Wakar wrote that "in the poignant "A Winter's Tale", Maja Kleczewska takes us to hell, clashing lyricism with cruelty. A beautiful, yet terrifying staging." "Dwutygodnik" critic Paweł Soszyński added: "'A Winter's Journey' matches extreme perspectives; the poetry in Schubert's song cycles and Jelinek's linguistic persecutory delusion (...) as well as a directorial summary of Kleczewska's own theatre, its mechanisms, formal obsessions and dramatic fixations."  "A Winter's Journey" was created with joined budgets and artistic teams of Polish Theatre in Bydgoszcz and Powszechny Theatre in Łódź.
