06/30 The Weeknd

The Weeknd is the third Open’er 2017 headliner. He is one of the most unique, most charismatic and wanted artists of recent years!

It’s hard to imagine a better moment for the announcement of The Weeknd’s first concert in Poland. The Canadian artist has just released his third album, which debuted in the USA on the list of bestselling albums, and all songs from that album can be found on the Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart. It’s a record and the first time it happened in history. Additionally, while we are writing these words, “Starboy” is probably number one album in at least 1/3 of the world’s countries. This is the domination that no one expected a few years ago.

The Weeknd was brought to light exactly 6 years ago. In December 2010, three songs signed with a mysterious pseudonym appeared on YouTube. When three months ago, The Weeknd released his first mixtape “House of Balloons”, it was revealed that a 21 year old Canadian, Abel Tesfaye stands behind the project. The rest of his biography consisted of gossips and insinuations. The Internet buzzed about The Weeknd and the critics went crazy for his 9 songs. The success was also supported by Drake, who not only convinced fans to purchase ”HoB”, but also featured the artist on his album “Take Care” and the OVO Sound festival.

The Weeknd has been named the father of “new R&B”, with interchangeably used terms such as “alternative” or “hipster”. Dense, hypnotic background, climates and lyrics full of sexual and narcotic references have become his signature. “HoB” was just a first part of the series of mixtapes – by the end of the year, two more were released: “Thursday” and “Echoes of Silence”. Most people must have heard the name The Weeknd in 2011.

All three mixtapes were downloaded over 8 million times which resulted in signing a record deal and releasing material under the title of “Trilogy”. After a series of festival concerts The Weeknd played “The Weeknd Fall Tour”, his first solo tour. Actually each tour name of his included a word “fall”. At the same time The Weeknd started working on his debut album “Kiss Land”. Album came out in 2013 and debuted at #2 on Billboard. The Weeknd’s music is known for its subtle flirt with pop music. On “Kiss Land” The Weeknd sampled The Police, Portishead and worked with Drake and Pharrell.

In the following months The Weeknd appeared on Sia’s album, remixed Beyonce’s music and supported Justin Timberlake. In 2014 he released two singles – “Often” and “Earned It” – the latter was recorded for “50 Shades of Grey” soundtrack. Global popularity of the track encouraged him and his team to release the new album as soon as possible. In September 2015 “Beauty Behind the Madness” was released and hit #1 on the Billboard charts. It spawned the #1 hit “Can’t Feel My Face” which sounded like a never-before-released Michael Jackson track.

In 2016 he appeared as a guest on two high-profile releases – Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade” – and was finalized with a brilliant album. “Starboy” contains 18 tracks (two of them were produced by the French duo Daft Punk), guest appearances from Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar and Future and an accompanying film “M A N I A”. Next year’s tour promoting “Starboy” is one of the most anticipated concert tours of the recent years – especially in Europe where The Weeknd rarely comes. On June 30 he will perform in Poland for the very first time as an Open’er Festival headliner.
